This charming YA novel is set in post-Roman Britain, in Cornwall, where the members of a British tribe periodically choose a young girl to dedicate to the sea goddess. She becomes a priestess, as well as a healer and counselor for her people. Astria, the novel's protagonist, has just been chosen for this position and is about to undergo initiation when she finds a nearly-drowned young man washed up on the shore. She rescues him and nurses him back to health, and the two fall in love -- but forces from their respective families threaten to draw them apart forever. The story is lyrically written, and while its course is somewhat predictable, there is a lot of pleasure to be gained from the prose and character development, as well as the way the author has created a detailed, believable late Romano-British culture. If you like the tales of Rosemary Sutcliffe, like _Eagle of the Ninth_, you will like this book.Tags : The mermaid's daughter [Joyce Gard] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Astria lives on the Isles of Scilly during the time of theRoman occupation of Great Britain and has been chosen to be theMermaid's Daughter, a sacred religious role decreed by theGoddess... Beautifully written tale about the loss of innocence and love.
This book is a great read and informational too. It takes place in Cornwall and the Scilly Isles in Roman times....The story, characters (very well formed) and plot/sub-plots are rich with detail. Learning about a little known period of Brittany was enticing enough to make me want to go there and visit. I first read this book as a 12 year in Jr. High. Excellent book for young adults and adults. Hard to find.
