Beckwood Brae begins the series of stories by David H Webb with the two leading characters living in a sleepy undisturbed town in the Southern End of Herelstrom - that is about to be disturbed.
An old enemy seems to be renewing its interest in the little land. The mountains and huge forests that long protected them have been infiltrated. In the village there is growing apprehension as they attempt to understand the strange sightings and growing sense of dread.
In a rapidly moving story Norri and Tom find themselves caught up in events that threaten everything they know.
They both find themselves on strange journeys taking them far from everthing they know into dangers from which it seems impossible that they could return.
Tom must leave his new wife to travel north in the desperate struggle as their country makes desperate decisions to defend themselves.
Norri's journey is more mysterious as are his companions. A strange prophecy draws him forward with only a vague hint at the hope his heart. The words take him to a place where speaking an ordinary word makes an extraordinary difference.

Summary Beckwood Brae is high-quality, solid Fantasy Fare from Australian Fantasy Author David H Webb
Beckwood Brae is written in the third person and this perspective allows the reader to see events from different viewpoints and in different locations. David H Webb has created a beautiful, homely place in Egleton; a place that offers comfort, laughter, happiness and contentment… but there is a danger that is threatening their way of life. The author describes the feelings and the attitudes of the main characters well, for instance, Tom’s reluctant journey from his home to the capital city allows us to feel how he would far rather be at home with his wife and friends and preparing for a hearty meal rather than heading into a battle from which he may never return. Beckwood Brae is a very good and very enjoyable story - epic fantasy is its theme and it consists of all the elements that need to go together to make a great fantasy story. We have the idyllic homeland under threat; the simple man who’s life will be turned upside down when he discovers the truth of his ancestry; the prophecy; the quest. This is exactly what fantasy readers are looking for and when it is done well, which is the case here and it is great to be taken along for a fantastic ride.
Beckwood Brae is a very enjoyable and well-written book - fans of Tolkien will like what they find here; fans of Raymond E Feist’s Magician will also find that this is for them. The battle scenes are clearly described and exciting; the characters are well formed and easy to empathise with. Webb is a talented storyteller and his story is a classic – the local village lads that rise to become men who shake the very foundations of the world. There is intrigue, betrayal and bravery – all set within a beautifully described land – David H Webb has a real gift for describing trees, don’t ask me why, he just does and I still have the mental images of the forests near the mountains…
The Story that begins in Beckwood Brae continues in the second book in the series Arion - Book Two of the Chronicles of the Corriian Wars
Beckwood Brae Chronicles of the Corriian Wars Book 1 eBook David Webb
This book is the story of a land which has had very little trouble, suddenly being attacked by a formidable foe. Will the characters be able to rise up and overcome their fears? Will their faith falter, or prove to be based on something solid and trustworthy?I really liked some of the imaginative cultures in this story and the values of friendship, honor, trust, faith and courage which are the mainstay of the free land. The story falters a bit in the everyday conversations and details, but the creativity is fine and the battles and action scenes are very well done.

Beckwood Brae Chronicles of the Corriian Wars Book 1 eBook David Webb Reviews
I'm not finished, but had to stop review this book. A captivating story, it gets you in from the start. Without getting bogged down in pages of description that seem only to serve to pad out many stories in this genre, the author manages to convey the emotion of the characters, the dire situations they find themselves in. Can't wait to get back to it!!
I just finished Beckwood Brae. I loved it. There was some choppy movement through time toward the end, but overall it was an excellent read. I am a big fan of Tolkien and Lewis, and if I wrote a book, I would try along the sames lines as Webb has here. It's Webb's method and moral sense that I enjoy, in our real world of shying away from things relating to God. He gives us a picture of the right ways, God's ways, in looking at the relations of men and women. I also enjoyed His perspective on courage and how it relates to faith in God. I can't wait for book two.
You can always tell a good book when the first thing you want to do when you finish is to read it again, and then you find yourself waiting for the sequel to find out what happens next.
I just have finished re-reading Beckwood Brae, and if you like fantasy stories then this is one book you shouldn't miss. Unlike many modern fantasy novels, this is an engaging story with characters that are so real that you can identify with them. They are ordinary people dealing with difficult but believable situations. Even the enemy aren't all evil and without any redeeming qualities, which is a refreshing change.
The world of Beckwood Brae is described in such vivid detail that it is easy to visualise as you read. While similar to ours, there are many differences that are skillfully woven into the tale, with all of them working together to create a plausible alternate reality.
A story worth reading, and then worth reading again.
