A Reliable Wife was well liked by an acquaintance who said she couldn't put it down. When I saw it was available to borrow for free on Amazon, I jumped on the opportunity to read it. The first chapter was interesting, but by chapter 2, I started to get bored because the same theme was repeated. This repetition just went on and on. I kept at it, hoping that there would be some intrigue, some twist that would justify someone saying how much she loved it. Nothing. I plugged along. Finally, about 3/4 of the way through (and by then I was skimming the pages), I gave up and decided if I wanted to be bored, I could watch paint dry or something. The premise was interesting but how many times do we have to read about someone's fantasies before we progress to character development, plot twist, SOMETHING! I don't recommend this book--too many other good ones are out there.

This is the story of a rich man who advertises for a wife. It is set in 1907 and takes place in Wisconsin, Chicago and St. Louis. Based on the title and this description, I assumed a turn-of-the-century pastoral or possibly a gothic. This book is neither. It is literature, but it also surprising and includes its share of twists and turns. The characters are compelling and needy, but also represent (in some cases) the better part of humanity. Near the end, the author says this story is about despair, but I thought it was about redemption and love.
This book was very hard to get into. I kept thinking it was bound to get better, so i kept reading. It never got better. Toward the end I almost stopped reading it, but it was almost like a train wreck that I couldn't stop looking at and had to finish just to see if any part of it became good. It didn't.
Oh, my heart has awakened at the word pictures the author created. Each scene is exquisitely explained the similarities between a cold, wasted heart; a cold, wasted anger; and a cold, wasted life, on the backdrop of a cold wasteland. And in the end, each character finds what they were seeking, what they longed for. All set to the beautiful descriptive words of our author.
I'm confused about what to write about this book. In many respects I thought it was a good book, but I can't say I loved it. It was one of those in between books where sometimes It was imperative that I continue reading because I was so enthralled, while at other times I had to make myself read. The majority of time the book was engaging.

Mr. Goolrick sure does know how to weave a story. Even after reading the blurb I thought, `Oh my.' And I kept saying those words throughout the book. The setting and characters seemed so real. I kept wondering why Catherine was doing the things she did, even though her back-story was traumatic and clearly told, I could not relate to her. At one point I called her stupid, because I couldn't understand why she continued with her actions. I learned to respect the changes that came about in her, but I honestly can't say that I liked her, well maybe a little bit at the end.

Ralph baffled me too. For me it was like one of those poor little rich boy situations. I thought his story was interesting and the life he had lived was enviable, at least up until twenty years ago. At one point in the story I didn't understand why he was so weak when it came to Catherine. I'm still shaking my head about that.

Mr. Goolrick has a descriptive writing style, but at the same time it's choppy. Almost curt. It kind of reminds me of poetry, only in story form. He likes to elaborate and gives just a little more information than I thought was necessary. To me the story was not romantic, but instead sexual, without being overly graphic. I thought the way he wrote his sex scenes was brilliant.

I would recommend A Reliable Wife, especially if you are looking for something `different' with great writing.
This book is set in 1907 when a young woman answers an advertisement for a “reliable wife” to move to rural Wisconsin and marry a lonely yet rich widower. Trust me, the female protagonist is not reliable in any way at all.
But this book is a fascinating read about love, loss, sex (lots of sex), desire, deception, duplicity, and trust. It really breaks down to trusting someone whether you live or die…really trusting another. This novel explores the feelings of hopelessness and hope and how one emotion hinges on the other.
This book is not going to appeal to those queasy about reading lurid sexual details. It has a lot of them. But honestly, this book is so much more. I am amazed at the depth of this story once you replay it over and over in your mind.
We are molded and formed by memories. When love equals pain, then one may think that is how you “feel” love. “It was just a story of how the bitter cold gets into your bones and never leaves you, of how the memories get into your heart and never leave you alone, of the pain and the bitterness of what happens to you when you have no defenses.” At the end, it is the powerful story of redemption through love by people who had long since given up on finding any kind of love, kindness, or sympathy in this world. It’s the power of love and the power of hate and the fine line between the two. I thought it was a delicious story. 4 stars for me.
